Veraval is a municipality and the headquarters of Gir Somnath district in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is 6 km from Somnath. Veraval has a total population of 1,71,121. Fisheries have always been the main industry in the city and is dominanted by the Kharwas (fisherfolk).
The highest employment in the district is in Textile, Agro based, Mineral based, Handicraft and Fishery industries. Gir Somnath District was split from Junagadh district in August 2013, when seven new districts came into existence in Gujarat. The Junagarh district has 62% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 37% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 1% are Household workers.
Una is the biggest taluka in Gir Sonath district in number of villages. Main tourist attractions are Pauranik Talav (Ancient Lake), Rawal Dam, Ahmedpur Mandvi Beach and Sana Cave. Tulsishyam is a famous temple of Lord Krishna. Una is one of the the biggest Limestone suppliers in Gujarat. Talala Gir is Famous for its "KESAR MANGO", Siddis folk dance "Dhamal and Gir national park and Sanctuary". Siddi people who are originally from the South Africa are found in Jambur village, also known as Mini Africa of India. Sutrapada is a coastal taluka of Gir somnath district. This place is known for GHCL plant, largest soda ash producing company in the world. Gujarat Siddhi cement manufacturing plant is also located in the taluka.
The district is divided into four regions on the basis of distinctive soil characteristics. # Black Soil : Una, Gir-Dadhada, Kodinar and Talala talukas have black soil. # Calcareous Soil : Veraval and Sutrapada talukas have Calcareous soil. # Blakish Soil : Along the coastal belt of Veraval, Una and Gir-Dadhada talukas have Blakish Soil. # Lili Nagher: A strip between Veraval, Kodinar, Una and Gir-Gadhada is known as “Lili Nagher” The most part of the district is leveled. So the leveled area is fertile for agriculture purpose. The black cotton soil is composed largely of clay material.
The District is surrounded by group of Gir hills, intersected by Hiren, Shigoda, Raval, Saraswati & Machhundri rivers.
