Jagdalpur is a city in Bastar district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Jagdalpur is the administrative headquarters of Bastar District and Bastar Division. It was earlier the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Bastar. The city has a total population of 1,25,463.
The highest employment in the district is in Agro based, Metal based, Repairing and servicing, Wood based and Mineral based industries. The district has 90% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 9% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 1% are Household workers.
Bastar district inherits its name from the former Bastar State, which together with the erstwhile Kanker State, constituted the present district in 1948 as a result of their integration in the Central Provinces and Berar. The Bastar State itself derived its name from Bastar village, its former capital about 19 km north of Jagdalpur town. The capital was shifted to Jagdalpur south of the Indrawati River, after the first Maratha invasion by Nilu Pandit in about 1750 A.D.
The district is divided into 12 tehsils, 12 panchayat samitis, 296 patwari circles and 580 Gram Panchayats.
Bastar district has all the characteristics of Bastar Plateau. The district is currently a part of the Red Corridor. Rice is grown predominantly during kharif season as rain fed crop having 2.39 lakh hectare area but the productivity of this crop is very low 08.53 qt/ha in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. Exceptionally fortunate in its water resources, the region has good rainfall and rapid run off due to the undulating terrain.
