Raiganj is a city and a municipality in Uttar Dinajpur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the district as well as a subdivision. The total population of Raiganj is 183,612.
The highest employment in the district is in Wood/wooden based furniture, Paper & Paper products, Leather, Chemical/Chemical based and mineral based industry. The district has 65% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 31% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 4% are Household workers.
The District of Uttar Dinajpur came into existence on 1st April, 1992 after the bifurcation of erstwhile West Dinajpur District. The District occupies an area of 3,142 Sq. Km. enclosed by Bangladesh on the East, Bihar on the West, Darjeeling & Jalpaiguri District on the North and Malda District on the South. There are two Sub-Divisions in the district namely: Raiganj (District Headquarters) and Islampur.
The soil of the district may be classified as old alluvium, alluvium and new alluvium. The texture of old alluvium varies from stiff clay to clay loam. The soil is deep and in reaction neutral to slightly acidic The district is flat in general with a very gentle slope from North to South as a result of which the rivers generally have the same direction Nagar, Mahananda, Kulik and Sui are the main rivers.
