Located in the coastal delta of the Mahanadi River and on the shores of Bay of Bengal,this picturesque city with one of the finest coastlines, serves as the headquarters of the Puri district. According to the census data of 2011, the population of the district is 1.7 million out of which 37 percent are of the working age. Out of this, 54 percent are involved in the agriculture sector, 4 percent in the household industry and 42 percent in industry, tourism, trade and commerce. One of the most important temples of India, the Jagannath temple is the focal point of the city for the residents of Puri and pilgrims from across the country. The temple is a large contributor to employment and to the local economy. The Annual Car Festival draws pilgrims, tourists and students of Hinduism from across the globe. In terms of local crafts, Puri is well known for its textiles and  applique work.
