Situated at an elevation of about 820 ft in the Southeastern part of Punjab, Patiala is the fourth largest city of the Punjab State. The city has a population of 4,00,000 and Punjabi is the native and majorly spoken language. The city is famous for its culture and tradition, most significantly the Patiala Gharana of Indian Classical Music. Patiala Salwars, Juttis and Turbans are popular across the country. As per the 2011 census report, the total population of Patiala district is 1.9 million and 35 percent of the population belongs to the working segment. Out of this, 30 percent work in the agriculture sector while 4 percent engage in the household industry. The majority at 66 percent participate in the Industrial and Services sector. Patiala city was built by Baba Ala Singh, the founder of the royal dynasty of the Patiala State in 1763. Prominent sights in the city include Gurudwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib and Moti Bagh Sahib and The Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports which is Asias largest sports Institute.
