Palwal is the 145th largest Hindi speaking city of India with a total population of 1,28,730. Highest employment in Palwal is in the sectors of readymade garments, wooden furniture and household industries. 49% of the workforce is employed in the Agricultural Sector, 48% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 3% are Household workers. The major exportable items are Hydraulic Turbines, Rear Axle Shafts, Elevators and loaders, Cranes, Hoist, Azo initiators, Dairy Equipments, Webbing equipments, Piping system, Nut bolts, C.I.Castings, Milk Powder, Ghee etc. Palwal district has good irrigation facilities so there are more possibilities to grow more than one crop in a season. Seasonwise main crops are Potato, Leafy vegetables, Cucurbits, Tomato, Chillies and cauliflower. The city Palwal got its name from a great demon named "Palwali" who ruled during the reign of Pandavas. He was killed by Balarama, elder brother of Shri Krishna. In his memory, every year a festival is organized in Palwal which is known as "Baldev Chhat Ka Mela". There is also a temple dedicated to Balaram. Railway Station of Palwal is the place from where Mahatma Gandhiji was arrested the first time. A historical building, " Gandhi Ashrama" was made in the memory of Mahatma Gandhiji being arrested at the railway station. During the British period, Palwal was a part of the Punjab Province and a part of Gurgaon district. On 15 August 1979, Gurgaon district was further divided to form a new Faridabad district, and Palwal became a part of it. Finally, Palwal became the 21st district of Haryana on 15 August 2008.
