North Lakhimpur is a town in India and a municipal board in Lakhimpur district in the northeast India state Assam, about 394 kilometres (245 mi) north-east of Guwahati. It is the district headquarters of Lakhimpur district.
The highest employment in the district is in the Agriculture industry. The district has 66% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 31% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 3% are Household workers.
The Lakhimpur district was a part of old Pragjyogtishpur during 7th and 8th centuries. The undivided Lakhimpur district covered the areas of the present Dhemaji, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts which were subsequently carved out from the district. Lakhimpur district is bounded on the north by Subansiri and Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, on the east by a portion of Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh and a part of Dhemaji district, on the south by Jorhat and on the west by Sonitpur district.
For the administrative purposes, the entire district is divided into two sub-divisions viz. North Lakhimpur and Dhakuakhana. Lakhimpur district with its headquarters at North Lakhimpur and the sub-divisional headquarters at Dhakuakhana includes the 7 Revenue circles namely Lakhimpur, Dhakuakhana, Kadam, Nauboicha, Bihpuria, Narayanpur and Subansiri (Ghilamara) which covers 1184 villages. There are 9 numbers of Community Development Blocks viz. Narayanpur, Bihpuria, Karunabari, Nowboicha, Telahi, Lakhimpur , Boginadi, Ghilamara and Dhakuakhana. The district has 4 Towns which are all Statutory Towns.Lakhimpur district covers an area of 2277 Sq.Km.
The soil of the district is alluvial and fertile for which crops flourish without use of any artificial manure or hard labour. Brahmaputra, Subansiri, Ranganadi and Dikrong are the rivers which flow through the district.
