Founded in the year 1905, Nizamabad, with a total population of about 311,000 is the 3rd largest city of the state of Telangana and has a literacy rate of over 78%. The city serves as the headquarters of the Nizamabad district in Telangana. Nizamabad was a prominent city under the Nizams of Hyderabad and is named after the 4th Nizam, Nizam-ul-Mulk. As per the 2011 census, the population of the district is 2.5 million with a literacy rate of over 61 percent. 50 percent of the population is part of the workforce, out of which 58 percent are in the agriculture sector, 13 percent are in the household industry and 29 percent in industry and services. The Nizam Sugar Factory was the biggest sugar factory in Asia during the reign of the Nizams. Nizamabad is also the largest producer of rice in the state and there are numerous Rice mills situated across the district.
