Neemuch or Nimach is a town in the Malwa region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The town shares its northeastern border with state of Rajasthan and is the administrative headquarters of Neemuch District. It has a total population of 1,28,561. The highest employment in the district is in Agro based, FMCG, Jute, Textile, Wood based, Leather, Mineral based and Rubber industries. The district has 74% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 25% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 1% are Household workers.
The name of district Headquarter was once known as Minach due to predominance of Meena, a Schedule Tribe in the town. Due to Military Cantonment of British Governess, it was also called “NIMACH” (North India Military And Cavalry Headquarters). According to another mythology, Neemuch was so named due to the presence of very large number of Neem trees in this area.
The district is situated in the western region of Malwa Plateau adjoining the boundary of Rajasthan state. The district headquarter is Neemuch. According to Census 2011, the total number of villages in the district are 798, out of which 675 villages are inhabited and 123 villages are un-inhabited. There are 5 tahsils and three number of CD blocks, in the district. Tahsilwise number of villages are Jawad(129), Singoli(194), Jeeran(83), Neemuch(117) and Manasa(275). Besides, As per urban classification, the district has Ten towns namely Singoli, Ratangarh, Diken, Jawad, Manasa, Jeeran, Rampura and Kukdeshwar are Nagar Panchayats while Neemuch is a Municipality. There are 239 Gram Panchayats, 3 Janpad Panchayats namely Neemuch, Jawad and Manasa works under District Panchayat. District Panchayat is situated at Neemuch.
