Nagaon city, which is part of the district of the same name, has a population of 1,20,000. The city is bounded on the north by the Brahmaputra River, and the Kolong River, a tributary of Brahmaputra, flows through the city. Because of its geographical location, several beels or wetlands, marshy and swamp terrain can be seen around the city. Assamese is one of the main and official languages of the city. As per the 2011 census data, the total population of the district is 2.8 million, out of which 35 percent constitute the working population. 55 percent of the working population is employed in the agriculture sector, 4 percent participate in the household industry and 41 percent are engaged in services, trade & commerce. Nagaon played an important role in the Quit India Movement. Mahatma Gandhi visited the region in 1921 and the Santi Sena was organized. The people of Nagaon continued to play a vital role in the freedom struggle till India achieved its independence. Nagaon receives a large number of visitors to its famous Kaziranga National Park
