Morvi or Morbi is a city and a municipality in Morbi district in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is situated on the Kathiawar peninsula. The total population of the city is 2,10,451.
Morbi district is famous for its clock, mosaic/glaze tiles and roof tiles manufacturing units. 70% of Indias, and 12% of the Worlds, output of ceramic items are produced in Morbi. The district has 24% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 75% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 1% are Household workers.
During the British Raj era, Morvi State was one of several princely states governed by the Jadeja dynasty of Rajputs. It was classified as an 11-gun salute state. The Machchhu dam failure or Morbi disaster was a dam-related flood disaster which occurred on 11 August 1979, in India. The Machchu-2 dam, situated on the Machhu river, burst, sending a wall of water through the city.
