Mohali, Ajitgarh or Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar is a city in the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district (SAS Nagar) in Punjab, India, which is a commercial hub lying south-west to the Union Territory of Chandigarh. It is the administrative headquarters of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar District. It is also one of the six Municipal Corporations of the State. The total population of Mohali is 1,66,864.
The highest employment in the district is in Metal based, Machinery, Maintenance, Wood based, Food based, Leather and Chemical industries. The district has 18% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 78% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 4% are Household workers.
SAS Nagar attained the district status on 14th April, 2006 with SAS Nagar (Mohali) as its headquarters. It has been formed by including two tehsils namely, Kharar and SAS Nagar (Mohali) of Rupnagar district and one tehsil namely, Dera Bassi of Patiala disitrict. Prior to this, SAS Nagar was part of Rupnagar district.
The city of Mohali was renamed as Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (SAS Nagar) in the memory of Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru. For administrative purposes, SAS Nagar (Mohali) is a part of Patiala Division. It has three tehsils namely, Kharar, SAS Nagar (Mohali) and Dera Bassi.
The Topography of the district is even. It is mostly a plain of alluvial type. It also has loam to heavy loam and sand to sandy loam soils in certain parts of the district. The soil is rich in nutrients and suitable for crops like wheat, Paddy, Maize, Potato and Vegetables etc.
