Mainpuri is a city in Mainpuri district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of the Mainpuri district and is situated to the North-East of Agra and is 270 km from New Delhi. Mainpuri forms part of ancient legendary region of Lord Krishnas land called Braj. The total population of the city is 136,557.
The highest employment in the district is in Agro based, Textile based, Repairing and servicing, Machinery and Wood based industries. The district has 73% of the workforce employed in the Agricultural Sector, 23% in the Industrial Sector and the remaining 4% are Household workers.
The history of the district may be tracked back to remote antiquity. The presence of certain old indigenous people like Ahirs, Bhars, Cherus and Meos indicates that in primitive times this district was inhabited, though the bulk of the area was covered with forest. The fragments of masonry, broken pottery etc are proof of settled life and civilization in this area since very early times. The earliest people of the Aryan stock, who settled in this region were probably the Krivis. The kingdom was later on called south Panchala. Mainpuri district was, in all probability a part of Drupada dominion of south Panchala.
District administration comprises of Revenue, Development, Police (Law and Order), Judiciary, and Local self-government. District Magistrate is Incharge of revenue & administration. He is assisted by Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) i.e., ADM (F&R). At the tahsil level Sub Divisional Magistrate is In-charge, who is now redesignated as Up-Jila Adhikari. He is assisted by Tahsildars in each tahsil and for revenue collection each tahsil is further entrusted to Naib Tahsildars and Kanongoss circles respectively. For each revenue village, Lekhpal is In-charge.
The Major River in the district are KALI nadi, ISAN & ARIND or RIND. There are four natural type of soil i.e. matiyar, bhur, dumat and pelia. The three main soil tracts are the normal sand tracts between Isan and Kali River, the central loam tracts between Isan and Kali on north and Sirsa on South. The southern mixed tracts is between Sirsa and Yamuna River. The barren land consist of mostly USAR land in certain portion of loam tracts mainly in the blocks of Mainpuri.
