Ludhiana, the largest city in Punjab and the largest city north of Delhi, is the 22nd most populated city of India. The city is situated in the Ludhiana District, on the old banks of the River Sutlej at 798 feet above the sea level. The region is centrally located in the Punjab plains, well drained by the rivers Sutlej, Beas and Ravi. Ludhiana city was founded by the Lodhi dynasty on the site of a village called Mir Hota in the year 1481.The city has a population of 1.6 million. Punjabi is the native and most widely spoken language. According to the census report of 2011, the total population of the district is 3.4 million out of which 14 percent are in the working age group .77 percent of this working population is involved in industrial or manufacturing activities, trade and commerce while only 12 percent are engaged in agricultural activity. The city is therefore also known as the industrial hub of North India, famous for its bicycle manufacturing, tractor, two wheeler and auto parts manufacturing, manufacturing of other industrial goods, machine parts, household appliances, hosiery and apparel.
