Jaipur is the 2nd largest Hindi speaking city of India with a total population of 3.1 million. Highest employment in Jaipur district is in the sectors of Ready Made garments, Gems, Jewelry, Handicrafts, Wooden furniture, Leather goods, and in the Construction Industry. Jaipur is a world leader in handmade Jewelry. 61% of the workforce is employed in the Industrial Sector, 35% in the Agricultural Sector and the remaining 4% are Household workers. Jaipur district is not a big agricultural belt owing to the surrounding Thar Desert and hilly land formation. The area to the east and north of Jaipur is occupied by hilly ranges rising to over 200 meters. The district is drained by a number of largely non perennial rivers, of which Banganga and Sabi are the prominent ones. Jaipur has many manmade and natural lakes. The city of Jaipur was founded by and named after Jai Singh II, the Raja of Amer, in 1726. Jai Singh II ruled from 1688 to 1758, and shifted his capital from Amer, 11 kms from Jaipur to accommodate the growing population and increasing scarcity of water. Beginning in 1726, the construction of the “Pink City” as the capital took four years. Today, Jaipur is the largest city of the state of Rajasthan in Western India.
