Fatehpur has a total population of 1,831,93 and ranks 96th in term of Hindi speakers. Major employment in Fatehpur is in Agriculture, leather industry and in handicrafts. Out of entire workforce, 71% are employed in Agriculture, 24% are employed in handicrafts, leather industry and in the government sector and remaining 5% Household workers. Fatehpur has a good agricultural belt because of the Rivers Ganga, Round, Pandu Nadi, Bari Nadi, Yamuna, Chhoti Nadi, Nun, Sasur Khaderi. The soil of the region is very fertile. Fatehpur is located on 110 meters above the main sea level. The history of Fatehpur district goes back to the Vedic era. In village Renh, which is 25 km in the south-west of Fatehpur town, some artifacts have been recovered which go back to the 800 B.C.E. Many artifacts, including coins, bricks and idols of the Maurya period, Kushan period & Gupta period have been found throughout the district. The remains of Gupta period temples are laid in villages Tenduli, Korari and Sarhan Bujurg which are important archaeological sites. Gold coins of Chandragupta II have been recovered from the village of Bijauli. In 1561 A.D., Mughal emperor Humayun passed through this town while invading Jaunpur state. On 5 January 1659 CE Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had a fierce battle with his brother Prince Shah Shuja and killed him near this place. To celebrate the victory, he constructed a large beautiful garden "Badshahi Bagh" and a big lodge having 130 rooms. During the Mughal regime, the control of Fatehpur changed hands between rulers of Jaunpur, Delhi and Kannauj.
