वसंत में खिलने वाला अमलतास का वृक्ष देखने में बड़ा ही लुभावना होता है। इसकी बहार का रंग बहुतायता से सुवर्ण की तरह पीला होता है लेकिन यह नील लोहित रंग अथवा बैंगनी रंग का भी होता है। सुवर्ण अमलतास बहुत मात्रा में दिखते हैं लेकिन नील लोहित अमलतास मिलना दुर्लभ है।
अमलतास प्लान्टे (Plantae) जगत के माग्नोलियोफायटा (Magnoliophyta) विभाग के कैसिया (Cassia) वंश का वृक्ष है। इसका कुल फ़ाबाशिए (Fabaceae) है तथा उप-वर्ग रोसिडे (Rosidae) है। यह अर्ध-पर्णपाती, पर्णपाती क़िस्म का पेड़ है जो दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया और आस-पास के प्रदेश का जन्मज है। इसे सजावटी तौर पर तथा औषधीय गुणों के लिए भी लगाया जाता है।
अमलतास को संस्कृत में आरग्वध कहा जाता है जिसका मतलब है रोग हरण करने वाला। इसके फल के गूदे को रेचक के तौर पर इस्तेमाल किया जाता है तथा यह पित्तनाशक, बलगमनाशक और वातनाशक है। इसका इस्तेमाल ज्वर हटाने के लिए भी किया जाता है लेकिन बहुत ही कम मात्रा में। इस पेड़ की छाल का इस्तेमाल चमड़े के रंजक के तौर पर भी करते हैं तथा इसकी लकड़ी सज्जा के हलके कामों के लिए इस्तेमाल की जाती है।
